Comment on new policy for markets on City-owned land

The City of Cape Town is calling on residents and stakeholders to share their views on the newly proposed Market Management Policy. This initiative aims to improve how markets on City-owned land are managed, encouraging high standards and better growth opportunities for local markets.
‘Our markets are not just places to buy and sell, they’re vibrant hubs of local trade that support jobs and small businesses. However, to unlock their full potential, we need clear guidelines and structures in place that ensure they operate efficiently and grow sustainably.
‘This policy builds on the City’s ongoing efforts to create an environment that boosts job creation and attracts investment. By improving governance and management models, the policy will help markets thrive as key drivers of economic development and job creation across Cape Town.
‘Markets provide affordable goods, support local producers, and breathe life into public spaces, but we also recognise the challenges like unclear regulations and inadequate infrastructure that can hold them back. With this policy, we’re setting the stage for markets to flourish,’ said Mayoral Committee member for Economic Growth, Alderman James Vos.
The proposed policy clearly outlines the responsibilities of the City, market operators, and traders, ensuring that markets are well-managed, financially viable, and capable of delivering real economic benefits.
The City is eager for public input and encourages all Capetonians to participate in the public consultation process.

Once the public consultation process is complete, feedback will be reviewed, and necessary amendments will be made before the policy is submitted to the relevant committees for approval.
